Slow Drain or Main Line Backup? How to Tell the Difference
A single slow drain usually has a local cause, such as hair in a tub, grease in a kitchen sink or debris in a trap. It is limited to one fixture and often clears with basic cleaning.
A main line problem looks different. Several fixtures slow down together. A toilet gurgles when you run the washing machine. Water appears in the lowest shower or floor drain in the house. These signs point to a blockage in the shared line.
If more than one fixture is affected, stop running water and call. Running more water into a blocked main line can push wastewater up into the house.
Describe what you see when you call: which fixtures, how long it has been happening and what changed recently. That helps decide whether it is a quick clearing job or a line that needs a camera inspection.
